Re: Are stories like Orwell's 1984 too dismal for today?

On a side note: Whether Orwell "got it right" or not is less important to me than seeing the future from a previous perspective. For this reason I also find early science fiction movies interesting. Aletta, Queen of Mars (Soviet Union 1925), Things To Come (UK 1936), etc. One thing which s...

Re: Are stories like Orwell's 1984 too dismal for today?

But then I ask another question, “What if you were living in Germany in 1936, and your best friend was a teacher, a philosopher, or Jewish? What if Hitler had the Internet at his disposal and could instantaneously know who had searched for, How to leave Germany? What then? What would you say if you...

Re: What is the one thing that a writer does to annoy you? Pet Peeves.

When, in setting forth dialogue, the author constantly repeats 'he said' or 'she said'. Don't these people know you can show speech in other ways; "he responded," "she replied," or even... she stared at him with cold eye. "And?" I agree. It seems to me that a passage o...

Re: How to do romance scenes?

Whether one writes fiction or non-fiction, a convincing love scene is an achievement. Plenty of otherwise good writers fail miserably at this craft. The less you say the better. Don't discuss his or her "moves" unless you are writing comedy.

Several things put me off. Whatever they are, they break the mood. In prose, starting a sentence with an adverb in no way conveys the quality of the subject. Incorrect assumptions made about technical details which show the author's lack of research are all too common.

Re: How was your early stage in promoting your first ebook?

For under two hundred dollars they sent my ad out to fifteen thousand customers, along with ads for sushi, cheeseburgers, tacos, etc. I think I sold two copies from that, but hey, that's two copies. There's a novel in that. And on the strength of your frankness I would like to read your story. Can ...

Re: Have technological advances ruined science fiction?

It is hard to consider this question without thinking of what Hollywood has done to SciFi. It produced the same overkill with Westerns back in the 1950s. The big problem for writers is to avoid what has been done before. This is important to an SF author more so than other genre because it is the ve...

Re: Do you enjoy books with lots of historical/factual details?

I take it we are talking about fiction, as a work of History is bound to be full of detail. I write historical fiction, so the short answer to the OP is yes. However, the way the author introduces those facts and details can make or break the mood of the work. Any historical detail needs to have a d...
