This is very well phrased.Interbane wrote:There is no single belief that isn't attached to its neighbors in a person's web of belief. These neighbors have names too. But their names are not "atheism". That term is for the disbelief in a deity. Neighboring beliefs, such as "anti-religious" are not synonymous with atheist, and they refer to different(albeit related) things. You're trying to hit a trim nail with a sledgehammer here ant.

You should be stopped at every airport, train station, taxi stand, cross road, restaurant, school yard, hell there should be guards at your doors with orders not to let you out, ever.

Re: Sam Harris is back at promoting racial profiling
It
And their promotion of atheism is to evangelize it immediately after creating caricatures of religious people.
Harris takes this one step further and racially discriminates against people that look like OBL.
The root of his blatant hostility is his brand of atheism that causes him to disdain people who look like their muslim.
Anyone who supports Harris's web of belief should have their morality seriously questioned.
We cant tolerate people like Harris who are willing to profile people based on their looks alone!
First he advocates a nuclear preemptive strike against Mulsims and now he wants people profiled if they look like terrorists!
His atheism is dangerous!
His sheeple are blind to it!
Yes indeed.strikes me that Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins need religious extremists in order to make their case for atheism which in their case is scientism.

Re: Sam Harris is back at promoting racial profiling
What I'm getting from ant's claim is that it's illegitimate to infer anything whatsoever from someone's appearance, but legitimate to attribute any mental trait to another one that we see as causal. False attribution.
What Harris said about profiling in the situation mentioned is similar to what religious conservatives might also say, so I don't see how a link to atheism makes any sense. I don't always agree with Harris, but it's admirable that he doesn't care on which side of the political divide his thinking lands him. Sometimes it's on the right, sometimes the left.
For the record, Harris has said he doesn't like the label atheist. It identifies him by a belief that doesn't apply to him. He doesn't consider himself an atheist for the same reason that he doesn't consider himself a nonastrologer.

Reza Aslan. Why is it all these Sam Harris disciples get so infuriated when one literally quotes the words of their master? It's so creepy and cultish.
I guess Im not thr only one who's noticed this.

Thoughts on why Sam Harris-like racial profiling doesn't work:
http://www.vox.com/2015/9/16/9341037/ah ... -profiling
http://www.vox.com/2015/9/16/9341037/ah ... -profiling
This is textbook racial and religious profiling: Mohamed looked like what the Irving police thought terrorists looked like, so they treated him differently.
It's also the perfect example of why profiling doesn't work. And yet, the idea remains disturbingly popular. Just Tuesday, the writer Sam Harris endorsed profiling on a radio appearance: "If Jerry Seinfeld’s going to the airport, [and] he gets the same search that someone who looks like Osama bin Laden does, that’s a crazy misuse of resources."

Re: Sam Harris is back at promoting racial profiling
This isn't a case of racial profiling as a legitimate technique used in some situations by law enforcement. This is a case of community members totally overracting. Your attempt to make this about Sam Harris is pretty funny though. Do you think the school board and principal and everybody who grossly overreacted in this case are so-called "New Atheists" in the Sam Harris mold?ant wrote:Thoughts on why Sam Harris-like racial profiling doesn't work:

Well, lets say you are looking for white supremacists.
We can probably spend less time on Wesley Snipes than we do on the guys from Duck Dynasty.
But that should not mean we push everybody with a neck-beard and swamper boots into the cavity search line.

Are you pushing your own short comings on us and safely hating them from a distance?
Is this the virtue of faith? To never change your mind: especially when you should?
Young Earth Creationists take offense at the idea that we have a common heritage with other animals. Why is being the descendant of a mud golem any better?

Re: Sam Harris is back at promoting racial profiling
There's simply no other way to define what Harris is promoting - it's called RACIAL PROFILING - and I'm mortified that anyone would even try to clean up his bigoted crap just because they admire him and his cult.
Simply amazing.
This type of atheism is so religious about its irreligiousness that it even goes as far as justifying racial profiling (and preemptive nuclear strikes and entire nations).
It hides its religiosity in order to infest the political arena without subjecting itself to wall of church and state.
