I didn't want to put this thread in "Entertainment." If you've seen any of the series, it's intense, much more graphically violent than the original back in 1977--at least this is my strong impression, and it makes sense given the growing willingness to depict violence in film. I saw the original but have only a vague recollection of O.J. Simpson and LeVar Burton! It'd be interesting to see the old series again, though I probably won't make the time. "Roots" was a very big event in '77. Just by nature of the TV landscape today, the remake couldn't possibly command the same size audience.

I watched parts of the first three parts and all of part 4, and I do plan to watch the first three On Demand. I like Condoleeza Rice's description of slavery as America's birth defect. Very sad for the country, and when I hear about American Exceptionalism I can't help but think a large dose of humility is needed.

So what did you think of this event?

I was not aware that a new version of "Roots" was out; but then I don't watch much television these days, and I don't have cable or satellite. Who produced it? and when and what channel is it on?

It was billed as an A & E production, shown on the History Channel in my area. It doesn't seem to have attracted a lot of attention. Do you recall the original series? Back then, it was more possible for an entertainment event to capture the general attention. There were simply fewer options in all spheres of life.

I did see the orginal series, after reading the book. I thought the first half of the series followed the book pretty well, though there were some obviosly fictionalized portions. The second part was less interesting, as too much of it was fiction.

Just by the way, I see there's a new movie out with Matthew McConnaghey (sp) called "The Free State of Jones," about a Confederate deserter who mounts a rebellion of his own against the rich planter class, apparently enlisting slaves in his fight. I wonder what liberties with history that film might be taking. Often, Hollywood simplifies the normally complex motives people have, in order to deliver a message the audience will respond well to. The idea is to be inspirational.
