I'll cast 3 votes as follows...

2 for Bird and 1 for Snow

Current Tally

1 Crypt = 3
2 Help = 1
3 Kafka = 7
4 Bird = 14
5 Snow = 5

Let's end this poll tomorrow night.

Well, I guess I'm all alone! Three votes for The Help. I think there could be a lot of great discussions about roles of women and race. I was going to read this book anyway, and I would be great to discuss with others. Also, it looks like a quick read, so I can get caught up with Don Quixote by the end of June :)

farmgirlshelley, please read the directions. :) Or are you wanting to cast 3 votes for that book? If so it is still helpful to say so.

Post Re: Official Fiction Book Poll: Vote for our June, July & August 2010 FICTION book!
2 votes for Windup Bird Chronicle
1 vote for Book Kafka on the shore

Alright her are the reasons.

Murakami has piqued my interest ever since I knew he was the Japanese translator for Raymond Carver. The I read about Windup Bird Chronicle and bought it. Unfortunately, my friend borrowed it then and never returned it. When she married me our books were mutually merged and I now have the chance to read it. What better way to do it than with a bunch of folks who are going to read with me!

This friend also went on to read Kafka on the shore and she assures me that this is a better book. She says Murakami can be surreal (in the louis-bunuel-sort-of-way) and also terribly eastern in his aesthetic. Further he breaks away from the long line of Japanese writers like Mishima and kawabata and writes in a style that reflects the concerns of urban Japan whose constant imagery is of Anime cartoons, Harakiri, Samurai and brand new Electronics not to mention Urban Legends and weird cults. Coming from another country in the east, India, and with aspirations to write, I am eager to know how the eastern aesthetic has been differentiated from the western in an influential writer.

Plus I want to read something different and by what I read and what I have been told this is supposed to be very different from other reads I did this year. Looking forward to it.
