I know it does not have some of the characteristics that were first mentioned at the beginning of this thread, but what I find interesing in "The Lottery" is the symbolism. I would also like to hear people's opinion about what it was about, and what the true meaning of it is.

Well, when they first say "the lottery", I imagined the present day lottery where you win money. That's why I was pretty confused when people seemed apprehensive. Also, my suspicion that it wasn't like our present lottery was when the wife was saying that it wasn't fair. After that, I was just curious as to what would happen, and was simultaneously shocked and horrified at what "winning" the lottery meant.

Obviously, they do this custom because it's an ancient tradition. Why their ancestors started something like that is beyond me.

Ooooohhh yeah.... I like it....

Anyone ready for our second Dark Side selection. I was thinking Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Let me know what you think.

This looks interesting, I think I've read another one by this author, "Uncle Silias". My library does not have this, I'll check it out at a book store, I'll let you know if I get it.

I would read this again. It would be a good followup to The Yellow Wallpaper.

BTW, I got this story from, "American Gothic Tales", edited by Joyce Carol Oates. It's a great book!

Edith Wharton was a great writer of ghost tales. You can get all of them in one volume, The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton. I have always thought Ethan Frome would be good book to discuss here. American Gothic Tales looks like a good bet too.

Afterward looks good to me. Let's discuss that. I will go ahead and read it It would mek a great followup to Yellow Wallpaper.
