Need help remembering some books

I'm trying to think of a series of fiction books which have very weird names. I'd run across them long ago and have forgotten most everything about them. I think they are HP Lovecraft-ish in nature, and the name is "gormengander' or something similarly odd. This is a shot in the dark, but perhaps someone will by chance know what I'm talking about. Anyone?

I have not read that series. How was it? Worth picking up from the library?
