Hey, one thing I believe you might enjoy--starting your own plants from seeds. I do this every year in my basement starting around mid February. All you need are some fluorescent shop lights, some plastic trays and cells, some seed-starting medium, and off you go. You grow the babies until it's warm enough to plant them outside, "harden them off" for a few days, and put 'em in the ground. I grow vegetables like tomatoes and peppers, herbs like basil and parsely, as well as annual and perennial flowers. You can do this on the cheap, and you have so much more lattitude as far as what varieties you grow.

Camacho, if you haven't gardened before, I recommend you get in good with some of your neighbors that garden. You need to understand local conditions, planting dates, pests, plant diseases, and the controls that work best in your area. They can tell you what will produce and what won't. Anyway, start small. Water is more important than fertilizer.

About "old railroad ties," you need to know whether they have been treated with arsenic compounds. Talk to a county agriculture agent.

farmgirlshelley-- that is so great that you are a "book buddy"-- I've never heard of that-- I think it's awesome. I'm going to ask the library here if they have such a program.

I LOVE gardening too.

Interesting question, what do I do?

Unread post

Here is the list. I work for the State of New Mexico as a regulator of the casino industry. This is my primary work. I teach on-line courses at the local community college. (Computers and casino regulation) I write book reviews for www.readingnewmwexico.com, a site dedicated to New Mexico Authors. And finally, I write. I have four novels currently published, all in the Library of Congress. I would invite you to check them out. My website is www.gregoryjsaunders.com

Thanks for the discussion.

In order to keep me from living in a van down by the river while I promote my publishing and photography business, I am an office manager at a Driving School. I am also a mother of three boys, and three cats. :D

I'm a librarian for the public library system...love the books...not so crazy about the people!
Sad thing is, I'm surrounded by books but I will only read the brand new ones as the older models tend to be somewhat disgusting
So...I buy alot of books!

I also train horses in dressage, photograph horse shows etc and take care of my busy 2 year old daughter...no wonder I'm exhausted :P
