Do you ever give up on a book you're reading?

Unread post

I'm usually reluctant to stop reading a book once I've started, but I'll do it if the book becomes too much of a chore. Usually if I make it to the halfway point, I'll forge ahead.

One that comes to mind is: The Martian by Andy Weir. I just found it incredibly boring, though the movie was actually pretty good.

Another that comes to mind is World War Z by Max Brooks. As I recall, there were just too many characters. There wasn't anyone I could root for.

Fortunately, this is the exception, not the rule. Most books I choose to read are great!

I used to think I had a duty to finish a book I started. I long ago gave up that thinking. Life is too short. I won't get rid of the book. I'll put on the shelf. But, I will move on to another book. There are just too many great books to stick with one that doesn't hold my interest. In fact, I would sooner reread a favorite book . I long ago discovered that I get more from rereading a good book than plowing through one that I lost interest in.

I never completed The Martian book but did like the movie. I'm embarrassed to say that I quit a ton of books. I guess I have reading ADHD. If a book doesn't capture my attention within the first chapter or two I'm off to the next. Yes, I'll often return to the older book and then slap myself for judging it so quickly.

Impressive as hell. I quit 3 books per month.
