A gripping psychological thriller from one of the bestselling authors in 'Michael Myers'.

Jeremy Hargreaves is the head of the forensics department at the 6th precinct of the Arkansas police force. Jeremy is good at his job, and is regarded by his colleagues and superiors as a genius. Whenever Jeremy gets on a case, any evidence, regardless of how little, is a fatal flaw for any criminal. Generally, he is friends with everyone. Although no one ever really gets into his personal space, he rarely ever allows it. The whole precinct knows Jeremy is a genius, but what they do not know is the gore of the crime scenes, and images of the dead, combined with a history of psychological abuse as a child, have begun to plague the forensic expert with nightmares. Soon, he begins to talk to himself when he is alone, and battles for his sanity. Jane Fitzgerald is a budding psychologist from Harvard who wants to work at the police precinct in her home state. With increasing reports of the incompetence of the staff psychologist at the 6th precinct, Jane’s brother, a detective in New York, pulls some strings, and gets his sister a job in Arkansas. There, she begins to assess the staff and soon takes interest in Jeremy. What starts out as a session soon blossoms into a crush for Jeremy, but the case is not so for Jane, and she recommends him for compulsory leave for a month to cope with what she believes may be PTSD. During this time, she begins to visit him at home, and some part of her develops feelings for him.

After a chilling murder that bears similarities to the unsolved case in which Jeremy’s mother was killed when he was a child, the flimsy mental shield that Jane has helped him create is shattered, and his suspension leaves him feeling powerless. Jeremy develops a terrifying case of dissociative identity disorder. His other personality, known only as George, begins to commit crimes and clean them up with surgical precision. Every morning, Jeremy wakes up, having no idea what his other side has done. Three months after the suspension, Jeremy’s alter ego has left a string of unsolved murders which even he cannot unravel though he tries his best. During one of their sessions, Jane discovers that Jeremy is having memory gaps. When she begins to look at her journal of his sessions, a part of her very active imagination begins to conceive the dreadful truth. Jane goes over to his place to talk with him, hoping that the love he has for her will help him to open up. Unfortunately, Jeremy is not home. George is, and apparently, George has decided he no longer wants to go back in. It takes Jane a while to realize something is wrong, but by the time she does, George has also developed an interest in her. When he notices that Jane might break through to Jeremy, he decides to hide her in a place where only he can find her.
