I will be reading. I now read only one book at a time, so probably I'll finish pretty quickly. Not sure what effect that'll have on my participation, but I' m looking forward to this "missed classic."

Doing ok DWill, my Dad had to move in with us, as he's too ill to live alone now, and we have been adjusting the heck out of our lives I'm waiting for my copy of this book to arrive (I bet on two other books to win and bought those, but not this one. LoL)

I am into Book 1 Ch 3. I am enjoying the book. Baldwin has a very unique style. His use of words that do not seem to be appropriate, yet somehow are, is intriguing. It adds so much more emotion to an already emotional description. I am putting a couple other of his books on my personal reading list.
I am waiting to post more as there would be some spoilers.

I think some of this was the time in which the book came out. I feel like people were more apt to describe the world as they saw it and readers more apt to allow them to. Two books I feel speak to this sentiment are Junkie by William S. Burroughs and The Road by Jack Kerouac.Mr. P wrote:I am into Book 1 Ch 3. I am enjoying the book. Baldwin has a very unique style. In the interviews I've watched with Baldwin speaking either to a crowd or host, he comes across patient and convinced he's right, but he's also open to listening which is very nice. He often gave a little grin as he tugged on a smoke. I think of it as his way of saying, "Yes, but have you considered..." He also formed a glaring expression I've seen amongst my friends when they disapproved of something I said. I know they love me, but are about to school me. That's classic Baldwin. Good stuff!
Before my friend's video store went out of business, I acquired I Am Not Your Negro. It's one of my favorite documentaries. It has interviews with Baldwin speaking his thoughts on the activism of his time.
