The Young One & The Lands: Cipher of Ciphers

Unread post

The Young One & The Lands: Cipher of Ciphers is an ongoing, fantasy novel about the survival of a parentless boy in the seemingly coming apocalypse.

Synopsis:
It had been extremely, terribly — inconceivably long that the withering city laboured under the enslavement of a grim, tyrannical winter. Though in despair were its weary, spiritless, nigh-frozen folk, they were not utterly forsaken. For out of nowhere there suddenly came a warm, bright, unexpected dawn and delivered their every child, abode and house.

But could this much-welcomed light be their very hope, or their even grimmer, graver — crueler destruction?

A Poem from The Young One & The Lands: Cipher of Ciphers :)

In the land of lands lived a parentless boy,

In the secret of secrets howled a dustful tomb,

Over the sea of seas,

And wave of waves,

Crouched a great city.

Of where its dwellers indifferent and incurious.

Of where its tavernees imbibing and cavorting.

Oh, why did they not save

The cipher of ciphers?

Woe was the codex of the codices,

Woe was the folk of the old city,

For their destruction drew apace,

Their perishment approaching,

Their torment bone-splitting.

Oh, why did they not save

The cipher of ciphers?

End were their days,

Dead their children,

Ruination their city,

Perishes every little single life

Of the land

And the woods

If they could not

Find

And interpret

The last

Cipher

Of ciphers.

Now the young cloaked boy trudged forth with a far greater speed, his head fully hooded once more. His steps had begun to grow more and more adapt to the wind. Ever ahead of the rest he trod. Pieces of small debris flew wild in his view; broken doors of long-abandoned houses swinging furious and frightful; metallic shop signs blowing with incessant creaks and clanks; giant lightning tearing the cloudful sky apart.

Though determined was Rowan to press forth, a few emptied, unattended carts suddenly rolled creaking down at him. Pushed or pulled by nobody, they were apparently powered by the malicious gales. But as they moved close, the young one suddenly dodged without a slight contact, gracefully winding through them in a flawless movement.

As the hooded boy thought he had left the danger behind and turned his youthful head — a small, silent, sharp piece of broken pottery suddenly darted at his eyes. Without mercy it sped through as he shot flat to the ground.

A loud clink and a shatter.

Blinking its clear eyes, the black bird was now flying between the first and second tiers of branches. There seemed to be more room and less obstacles for the horizontal maze, allowing the raven to wing more freely. Wakefully the raven flew, slowly maneuvering through the baleful, unseen danger.

Suddenly a long, slender, perilous branch whipped towards the black bird’s beak. Without mercy it savagely slashed through as the raven shot up in a whizz, dodging it just in time. But on the next moment a cluster of sharp, taloning twigs sprang at its eyes. Furiously they clawed through as the black bird plunged down with a sudden spin, remaining unscathed.

But before it was able to regain its balance; a strong, sturdy bough swept up towards its neck — seemingly intending to break or murder the raven. Without pity the powerful, thick branch sprang shooting up as the black bird swerved all the way right, avoiding it with an abrupt curve.

Lengthy, frightful halberds they gripped.

Like thin spikes the poled weapons stood up straight and tall among the armoured patrol; their elevated, burnished blades glistening and sheening in the golden gleams.

“The end is near,” suddenly muttered one of the soldiers, his voice ungraceful and rough. “No one could survive this harsh, ruthless cold.”

“Complain not, Aubert,” replied the comrade standing next to him. “Say such things only after our duty, would you? We don’t want this to be spread and heard by the high captain….”

“Neither I could bear it any longer,” followed another soldier. “This winter would kill us all, sooner or later,” he said. “It had been lingering for nine months.”

“Nine months!” a close by comrade suddenly exclaimed. “Should it not have been eight months for the most?” he blinked. “No.., it must have been less than eight months! ……Wait, six and a half months it should be…, wait! Or.., it should be…,” he felt troubled. “Goodness me! Is my memory trying to fool with me again?”

“Over eight months it is, Henry, and not a day less,” replied an older soldier, who seemed to be one of their lower captain. “Though it has yet to reach the ninth month, we shall not survive if the winter refuses to leave our city.”

“What.., is this a jest or a joke?” said the soldier standing next to him. “The winter should be long gone by now! And spring should have been dawning on the land! Why is it not here yet?” he mumbled worriedly.

______________________________

The crowd beleaguering the masoned stairs grew even more and more furious, their assault soon descending into a brutal barbarism. Stooping down, many picked up tough, large or sharper stones. With beastly bellows and cries, they began their unhinged assailance; hands from afar powerfully hurling injurious rocks at the shimmery soldiers; abrasive, sharp, tightly held stones striking their screaming armours; wrathful smites aiming their unvisored faces. Like a deathly, voracious tide they gradually engulfed all the footmen with copious, mortal smitings. The folk would not give up, they would not. They would do whatever it took to get to the top of the rampart. They must get to its top. Now they knew they had to incapacitate the soldiers. They had to burst their faces into blood, they had to crush their skulls, they had to gouge out their eyes. They had to kill them --- they had to kill them. They had to kill them.

Being pushed to the verge of losing their very own lives, the guards frantically floored some to the cobbled ground, elbowed others down to their oblivion. Sensing their soon, horrendous, inescapable death, they had their gaunleted hands suddenly gripping tight on the hilts; their dormant, sharpened swords ready to hiss into awakening.
