Trump's response to COVID 19

Unread post

According to this source America is divided about Trump's response to the pandemic.

Of course the strong divide is between the two parties..

Interestingly though, Independents are nearly split in the middle (I'm an Independent)

It's always baffled me how there could be any question on his fitness.

Anybody who wants a test gets a test.
- President Trump 3/6/20
Perhaps much of it can be explained by memory problems. Trump supporters forget or dismiss quotes from Interbane's post and all the lies about testing like the one above as the fog of fake news. Perhaps Trump supporters suddenly take Covid-19 seriously, think he has been strong for the past few days (especially when attacking Dem governors), and already cannot remember his weak and dismissive response. Militant amnesia.

As far as testing goes..,
there have been issues related to the most effective form of testing and how many "false positive" tests were directly related to less effective forms of testing.
Some hospitals are also using blood tests to determine if patients have COVID-19, but Dr. Procop warns that these have “implications” and stresses that this type of test isn’t used at Cleveland Clinic. “Different strains of the coronavirus circulate every year, causing the common cold,” he says. “This means blood tests may cross-react and deliver a false positive if a patient has been infected by one of these viruses in the past.”

How is it known if "official" COVID 19 deaths recorded have been accurately distinguished from "regular" flu deaths this year if there's been no testing method consistency throughout the world?

Trump's leadership includes a personal insistence on naming the SARS-CoV-2 virus as the "China Virus," "Chinese Virus," "Wuhan Virus," and inspiring in some circles even the "Chi-Com Virus." In a purely clinical, academic, philosophic, or intellectual realm this makes some sense because the virus originated in China, they made significant errors early on, and although they released the virus genome, China appears to be hiding significant amounts of information.

However Trump knows this is not an academic exercise and that by launching those labels into the fetid cesspool of American culture he would inspire violent repercussions across the nation like the following news story. Trump's followers understand that and enjoy spreading those labels for similar reasons.

Okay, let's see here: Either
1. The Corovirus is a hoax generated by Trump to spread confusion among the Democrats and insure his re-election; or
2. The corovirus is a hoax generated by the Democrats to weaken Trump, and get their candidate (whoever it is) elected; or
3. Do you suppose.... it just might be REAL?

Trump's statements and actions with regard to the coronavirus have been utterly cringeworthy. Our president has a pathological indifference to facts and advice from medical experts. He completely glossed over the dangers from the coronavirus, failed to act in any significant way. The end result is a nation woefully unprepared to deal with a coming pandemic, despite having several weeks to prepare. Fortunately many of our governors have taken proactive steps. But what should have been done on a federal level to procure medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) for doctors and nurses has been an absolute failure.

Here's why we need a science-literate president, or at the very least someone who can delegate authority to competent people. But what we have is Mike Pence, who thinks evolution is false, and Jared Kushner, who seems as bereft of morals and intelligence as his father-in-law. The only voice of reason we are seeing in the Trump Administration is Dr. Fauci, who has recently become a target of Trump's own right-wing conspiracy-theorist base. I can't honestly imagine a worst leader to lead us during this national emergency. If America is divided about Trump's response to the COVID-19 epidemic along political lines, this is clear evidence that political fealty makes some of us very stupid.

As far back as 2003, the GAO reported ventilator / mask stocks were weak and would not be enough to counter a bio terror /pandemic

https://www.gao.gov/new.items/d03924.pdf

In 2005, the Bush administration published a report that urged investment in local and national stockpiles, increasing domestic production capacity and coordinating research efforts toward cures and vaccines.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resour ... y-2005.pdf

Did the Obama Admin deplete the N95 stock pile in its 8 year administration and not replenish it?
During the presidency of Barack Obama, the national stockpile was seriously taxed as the administration addressed multiple crises over eight years. About "75 percent of N95 respirators and 25 percent of face masks contained in the CDC's Strategic National Stockpile (∼100 million products) were deployed for use in health care settings over the course of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic response," according to a 2017 study in the journal Health Security.

Again according to NIH, the stockpile's resources were also used during hurricanes Alex, Irene, Isaac and Sandy. Flooding in 2010 in North Dakota also called for stockpile funds to be deployed. The 2014 outbreaks of the ebola virus and botulism, as well as the 2016 outbreak of the zika virus, continued to significantly tax the stockpile with no serious effort from the Obama administration to replenish the fund.
Yes it did and failed to replenish the stock

Sure, some of our past presidents might have have done a better job to better prepare us for certain potential emergencies. And it's true there's always a tendency to play Monday morning quarterback with politicians, especially if they're not in your political party.

But in this case we had a huge heads up from China and other countries that a pandemic was on the way. If Obama or Bush had ignored these warnings, they'd be open to to criticism as well. How much difference would a few weeks have made? Who knows? But clearly the Trump Administration was blindsided when it was very clear to many experts that a response was needed.

This happened on Trump's watch. The virus is obviously not his fault, but he bears much responsibility for our lack of preparedness. He still has Jared Kushner leading the COVID-19 response for chrissakes!

We also have Sen. Burr cashing out his stocks while softpedaling the pandemic to his constituents. Not his finest hour either.
