Re: What are you reading these days?
I am currently reading "The Door Through Space" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is one of her earlier works, written in 1961. I am reading it, as I needed a break from "serius" works (non-fiction, biography, etc.)

Re: What are you reading these days?
A while back I saw that T.S. Eliot considered Shakespeare's Coriolanus to be superior to Hamlet. So I read Coriolanus. Then I read some Eliot and I remembered how much I like his FOUR QUARTETS. That link goes to a pdf I put together. On the first page there's a link that goes to Eliot reading the poem. You can right click that and open the recording in a separate window, then scroll down and follow the words. The piece meanders and sounds like word salad most of the time, but it's a great one.

Re: What are you reading these days?
Hello All!
I am fairly new here, but I wanted to contribute to the discussion. I am currently reading "1984," a book that I have never read but (obviously) a classic dystopian novel. I am taking time to try and catch up reading classic books that I did not have time to read in my younger years, so I am definitely open to suggestions.
This community looks like a great place to "hang out" online, so I'll be back.
Sincerely, Emily

I found a copy of The Things They Carried at a yard sale last weekend, so I'm re-reading it. Excellent book. It and Dubliners are my two favorite collections of short stories, ever.

Which Charles Dickens novel should I read?
I picked up a group of 10 of his novels, only two of which I've read. We did Great Expectations in school, and then later I read Oliver Twist. I liked both books and always intended to read more Dickens, and now I have the library. I think maybe David Copperfield and then The Old Curiosity Shop.

I was struck today by how many copies of it are still on sale in a local bookstore.
I don't remember much of the stories, but I remember a strong impression of how honest it was about war without trying to be sensationalist, and of how the author managed to put together a mosaic of snippets about the experience of soldiers to portray a powerful sense of how life goes in that situation.
It seemed to me that they lacked agency, being thrust into a situation beyond their control, and so they lacked the motivation to critique what was going on around them. They struggled with their own personal burdens instead. And isn't that how most of life goes? We are pawns of great forces, and we all too easily let our critical faculties go to the back burner because we are more than sufficiently challenged by the things in front of us to do.
