To me, it's a name without dignity and it's unprofessional. Frankly, how can you trust any research conducted on a vessel called Boaty McBoatface? It's like renaming the Hubble telescope One-Eyed Clyde. It's just dumb. This is supposed to be scientific research vessel and not the Captain's Tuesday Treasure House. Of course, they'll reject the name. What else can they do? Their mistake was asking the public for ideas in the first place. The public is an ass.

I'm all for calling the ship Boaty McBoatface as long as the "science is a religion" crowd then agrees to have all references to Jesus Christ--past, present and future--officially changed to "Mr. Jeezo McFartyhead." What's fair is fair.

As mentioned before, although the ship was named RRS Sir David Attenborough, it has a robotic submersible instrument that is named Boaty McBoatface. And guess what, Mr. Boaty McBoatface has already made a major climate change discovery!
Boaty McBoatface’s maiden outing has made a major discovery about how climate change is causing rising sea levels.
...Researchers found that the increasing winds are cooling water on the bottom of the ocean, forcing it to travel faster, creating turbulance as it mixed with warmer waters above. Experts said the mechanism has not been factored into current models for predicting the impact of increasing global temperatures on our oceans, meaning forecasts should be altered.

NASA wants kids to help name its 2020 Mars rover
NASA on Tuesday announced a nationwide contest to help select the name for its next Mars rover, planned to launch in July 2020. The contest, expected to begin in the fall of 2019, will give K-12 students in the U.S. the "chance to make history" by naming the rover, NASA said.

...NASA has also opened registration for people to judge the contest. Presumably, the judging process will aim to weed out names like Rovery McRoverface.
