I think media plays a huge part in why people are asking questions like this. I feel like there's so much fear mongering these days in the media. It brings ratings, I guess.

The largest, loudest source of fear mongering is from the white-house. His card is literally to fear everyone who isn't a third generation white American.ArtLoc wrote:I think media plays a huge part in why people are asking questions like this. Re: Is Civil War coming to America?
There's probably some truth in this statement. As we become more and more disconnected, we become more tribalist. And that's where identity politics comes in. It's interesting, from a purely clinical perspective, to see how the right wing is starting to embrace conspiracy theories and the like. Tribalism comes from a deeper, emotional place; it bypasses the rational part of the brain.ant wrote: But this is what happens in a large, multicultural nation that loses it's religion and replaces it with politics.
I'm thinking of that guy from North Carolina who heard on InfoWars that Democrats were running a child sex ring out of some pizza place? So he went down to D.C. with an AR-15, the weapon of choice for whackadoodles. Fortunately, no one was injured in that incident. We have not been so lucky in recent weeks.

Let's get a grip. People with full stomachs don't riot in the streets. Enough people go hungry and it's time to worry.

WRONG
I'm fairly certain these college kids were not all that hungry.
If you say they were, you need to provided evidence their stomachs were not full.
Thanks

The NY Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1940. They did not win the Cup again for 54 years until 1994 when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games.ant wrote:

Game 7 was in Madison Square Garden, where a heavy police and security presence followed fears Ranger fans would riot after the game, win or lose.
They were right. There was a riot — but not in the mean streets of Manhattan. The riot was in Vancouver.
In 1968 there were riots in over 100 cities following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Also in 1968, there was violence in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, where the police rioted against protestors outside the Conrad Hilton Hotel.
There were riots in LA after Rodney King. For years Great Britain was plagued with riots by soccer fans called "Hooligans." The list is long.
None of these people were hungry, ant. We all know that.
It's an expression.

It's a manner of speaking.

An idiom.

The expression is figurative.

You're off the map now.., inanely pontificating about sports mania. The NY Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1940. They did not win the Cup again for 54 years until 1994 when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games.

The point is very simple and one that you prompted with an obtuse falsehood: "People with full stomachs don't riot in the streets"
People can and often do riot with full stomachs.
Sleep well.

I would have said it was a figure of speech but you do not recognize a figure of speech when you see one.

Please excuse me for missing the point. English isn't my first language. What's your excuse for missing the point?

It's an empty expression.
If you're fond of empty expressions this might not be the place for you.
Does that italicized expression ring a bell?
I shall dispense with ringing yours further.
