Unread post

Excellent book about the Soviet bomb program and the US hydrogen bomb program. Couldn't put it down.

I second that, "read" it a long time ago as an audio book. It gets too technical at times, but it's easy to skip those brief sections. Two things I recall.

~ It is amazing how, with the technology of the time, they figured out things such as....adding gold plating to a certain component allowed it to survive the extreme heat for 1 millionth of a second longer, which is all it required to make the device work.
~ Scientists were not aghast at what they had created with the fission bomb. On the contrary, they could not wait to get started on the thermo-nuclear bomb. Why? Because the fission bomb has an upper limit on destructive power and there is no limit to a fusion/thermo-nuclear bomb.
