A meteor exploded over russia, a few hundred people were hurt, thankfully from falling glass, rather than being hit by an exploding meteor.

But this is just a baby meteor.
In 1908 a meteor exploded over tunguska river in russia that leveled a forest and that meteor is estimated to have been about a hundred meters across. It released energy estimated between 5 and 30 megatons.

but the tunguska meteor is just a baby compared to Apophis, a "near earth object" which caused a bit of a scare in 2004 when it was determined there was a slight chance of a collision in 2029. It looks pretty safe for now that Apophis won't hit us then.

"Near earth object" is the non-panicky way to say "earth collider" because as i understand it, anything classified as a "near earth object" is in a collision pattern with earth. It crosses our orbit and definitely WILL hit us some day, unless deflected from it's orbit, the question is when.
It turns out there are over 900 NEO's larger than a kilometer across.
For reference, the crator in the Yucatan penninsula in mexico, 180 kilometers across, was caused by an impactor estimated to be about 6 kilometers across. In paleontology there is a sediment layer that has been discovered all across the planet called the K-Pg boundary. This is a layer of clay that can be traced back to that crater in the Yucatan, created at the same time as the mass extinction of the dinosaurs.

Think that was bad?

Your Meteor ESPLODE!
In the absence of God, I found Man.

Are you pushing your own short comings on us and safely hating them from a distance?
Is this the virtue of faith? To never change your mind: especially when you should?
Young Earth Creationists take offense at the idea that we have a common heritage with other animals. Why is being the descendant of a mud golem any better?

Re: Your Meteor ESPLODE!
Livin' on borrowed time. Finally, that event that will unite humankind in action against a threat, just like in the sci-fi movies. Or would it be that way really? Maybe we'd have NEO deniers blocking the way.

I don't think we would have much time to think about it, would we?
