Thank you for sharing this. I had never heard of Cavello or his clever escape but it was genius and does mesh nicely with Sunday's theory.Ptimb wrote: I really liked this line of reasoning--> ‘You want a safe disguise, do you? You want a dress which will guarantee you harmless; a dress in which no one would ever look for a bomb?’ I nodded. He suddenly lifted his lion’s voice. ‘Why, then, dress up as an anarchist, you fool!’ This actually works. When a crowd was threatening to storm Domingo Cavallo's building, he escaped wearing a mask of his own face.

What do you suppose is the source of Syme's confidence? He does not have experience fighting anarchists in the flesh.Ni55a wrote:Syme - with a tempered arrogance (yet arrogance all the same, likely borne out of confidence) and cool as a cucumber demeanor.

Symes shows no respect for Joseph Chamberlain, whose name the Anarchists use as a pass code. See this link for background on Chamberlain's liberalism.

I wonder too if Chesterton was making the point that Chamberlain was so average that anyone could replace him.

Chesterton was definitley making fun of Chamberlain, although I'm not sure if he would think that anyone could replace him. Apparently the Monarchy thought that Chamberlain was quite a nuisance and hoped that he could not be duplicated.
