I would be interested in all except the one on Hitler experiences (we get waaaaay too much of that over here). May I make two suggestions?

Religion for Atheists: A Non-believer's Guide to the Uses of Religion by Alain Botton I think I've suggested it before, but it is Botton's suggestion on a secular use of religion "as a path to wisdom". "One thing religion has done well over the centuries is to change societies, de Botton observes, a lesson atheists can apply to their lives even today" (Bookmarks)

God's Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World by Cullen Murphy
"In the juxtaposition of the Inquisition with institutions and practices today, Cullen Murphy shows the lasting prevalence of the Catholic Church's techniques to stamp our heresy.....Murphy writes with wit and humor about what would be a terribly sordid topic. " (Cleveland Plain Dealer)
