I've been close friends with Frank for about 24 years and I've always found his positive and optimistic attitude amazing. And some of the things he has lived through might lead other people to become rather negative and pessimistic. But through it all he kept his chin up and never resorted to whining or making excuses.

Of course ignorance is bliss and Frank is a complete moron. He just doesn't get it. Right now he probably thinks I'm joking. The cool thing about idiots is you can talk about them right in front of their face and they just giggle and drool.

Frank, you need to move back to Florida someday.

Hey, I don't drool!

Besides you might want to consider keeping your comments to yourself or I might be tempted to bring up the Llama spitting story again!

We had a stabbing at the prison yesterday; an inmate somehow got hold of a steak knife (smuggled in most likely) and turned it on another inmate. The resulting cut spanned from the inmate's wrist to his elbow and was deep enough to see the bone through the length of the cut; a rather nasty situation all around.

Blood everywhere, the attacking inmate hid or passed off the knife, and the injured inmate had to be sent to the outside hospital which is paid for by the state.

The inmate that initiated the assault was eventually caught and will be living in the SHU for a while, but because he did not kill the other inmate he will be out of there before too long. Unless this goes to outside court, it almost never does because the inmates will not file complaints against each other, and generally will not testify against each other either; they fear the retaliation of the other inmates.

At least none of our officers were injured.

Because of this incident I will be working some overtime for a while, which is good money but I will not be posting again until I am through.

Well the over time is done (for now) we searched countless cells and found a lot of weapons and other contraband, it should take the inmates a good 3 or 4 days to replace it all.

Back to the normal grind.

Hi Frank,

How does the "contraband " get in ? With the help of visiors? Or unscrupulous guards?

Both, although most of the really bad stuff like weapons and drugs is mostly through the visit room.

But sometimes well connected inmates bribe officers to get them stuff; intimidation and blackmail are also somewhat common... used against both guards and other inmates.

In the case of a steak knife it's hard to tell... it might have been brought in by an officer wanting to use it for their lunch and then lost it. They would probably never report the loss because they were never supposed to have it in the prison in the first place.

It could also have simply been thrown over a fence to one of the inmates that do the landscaping.

I doubt that it was brought in from the visit room those inmates are strip frisked when the visit is over and I doubt that an inmate stuck a steak knife up their butt to sneak it past an officer... but you never know.

More news... Who knew a prison would be such a busy place?

Yesterday 2 of our work release inmates got arrested for selling drugs, even after all the cell searches we did over the last 2 days when I packed up one of the inmate's property (Yes I was lucky enough to be placed on the unit where the arrested inmates were housed) I found gang material.

So now the knuckle heads are likely going to do more time because they were arrested outside the prison, loose their outside work privileges and face disciplinary action inside the prison because of the contraband I found.

Dummies, I feel safe saying that selling drugs on the street was not the type of work that these guys were released to do. I can just picture them now telling their families that they even longer sentences because they acted stupid. That's a nice Christmas gift to send home for the holidays.

Well the prison is defiantly a busy place during the holidays. For the twelve days of Christmas we had more fights, a slew of suicide watches a stabbing a broken arm and a partridge in a pear tree.

I had a ton of over time...

Our Special Housing Unit (SHU) is now full, in order to put the recent violent offenders in the SHU we have to let some out back into general population. One of the above mentioned fights was started by an inmate released from the SHU that very same day.

I can't wait till New Years!

Well it's not even New Years yet and things are already getting nuts. Ill go down last nights list...

First we had an inmate in our SHU bite his tongue open so he could spit blood on a passing officer. The inmate has hepatitis so the officer now has to get screened himself. The inmate was sent to the outside hospital (On the state's dime of course)

Then we had an inmate caught with a razor blade and when the officers went to search him he fought back. The inmate was twisted up like a pretzel and sent to the SHU.

Then during a routine area check 2 officers discovered an inmate carrying a cell phone charger. This triggered a massive search that led to finding...

2 Cell phones with camera features and internet access.
1 DVD player with 10 porn videos
1 Play Station II with 2 games
2 shanks
50 ft of extension cord
2 pitchers of hooch
and a huge pair of ladies underwear. (No I am not kidding)

Santa must have been good to the inmates this year...

This will likely trigger an internal affairs investigation and another massive search is sure to follow.

Anyway even though I did not get stuck doing over time this morning I have no doubt that I will be getting home late tomorrow.
