Preview: Original verse by Lachlan Werner from the book, 'Summer Shorts', 'Ode to ventriloquism':

I talk to myself a lot these days;
I am my own best friend.
It's the madness of it that I love,
Lonely dialogues that don't seem to end.

I admire my own wit and humour,
Through personalities far from my own.
I'm sure you all think I'm a lunatic:
To be more talkative when alone.
But is it not a useful necessity,
To voice your innermost thoughts?
For my demons are far preferable
company;
Than to gas with your old priggish sorts.

The voices, they haunt me;
They drive me and taunt me.
Still, I keep them here always with me.

For they are my creations;
And my life's observations.
They're everything making me whole.
They are my views, my opinions;
They're the truth, hard and cold.
Question them what I think of you,
And prepare to be told!

So frankly, I would rather talk to myself
And receive the all honest back chat
Than with the average old Joe, listening to
tales of bleak woe.
And that, I'm afraid, is that.
