In addition to exploring the evolution of jazz, one of the joys is checking out all the nooks and crannies for treasure. Here's one I worked on just now.

Santana's album Caravanserai opens with a blanket of crickets to set the mood, then enters one of the most haunting and ethereal sax solos you're likely to hear.

Who did that sax solo? The same person who does a brief trippy Ian Anderson-esque flute solo on the last track of Caravanserai Every Step of the Way.

Hadley Caliman. Never heard of him, but there is much to explore. I don't see anything to indicate he would be an obvious candidate for those solos, Caliman seems rather straight ahead. I'd love to know the story of how Caliman was selected and whether the sax solo was written or improvised, etc. (Flute obviously improvised.)

Oh jazz thread, you are on my mind lately.

I wanted to comment on DB Roy's comments on jazz from the 1930s and 1940s. One of my go to albums is this box set.

Also, NPR has several downloadable shows about jazz, including a couple of 2-parters about Duke Ellington.

I've never heard of many of these jazz artists, so this is much appreciated. Apparently Ray Bauduc and Bob Haggart were in a band called Big Noise from Winnetka. Winnetka was my home town until I was about five years old.

The Decemberists' last couple of albums have amped up the greatness in my opinion. Although Colin Meloy's voice may be something of an acquired taste. I believe Suzanne posted this song last January. Here it is again.

we had the music book back in the day and it had the head all written out and then the strangest thing

it said

all members of the band take a solo in the key of their star sign.... lol i burst out laughing

then it had a list of all the various zodiac houses and the key that supposedly matched

i can only remember being so annoyed because i was sagittarius and my key was F major
