In Love With Robert Frost!

Unread post

My favorite poet is Anne Sexton, but I think that's about to change...

During school we have something called electives and I chose one called Poetry Out Loud. This is a competition (poetryoutloud.org is the website). And while browsing their poetry collection, I came upon rober Frost. I'm thinking of competing in it (maybe) and if I do, I'd definitely do some Robert Frost poems. This guy is a genius! (Well, I think so...)

Here's one of my favorites (don't worry, it's short):

Fire And Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

A bit about the Poetry Out Loud competition: You have to memorize two poems (one must be shorter than 25 lines) and then you recite them. The competition is kind of like the Spelling Bee: there are nationals, territorials, etc., every year. I'm still not sure if I'm going to compete.

He has inspired me to continue writing poetry. I can't remember when's the last time I wrote a poem... but I definitely need to start again! It's a great version of expression!

It's always great when you find a poem that speaks to you. I love this poem from Ogden Nash (not as short as yours, but it's got a quick tempo). I imagine that if I could write poetry, this is what I would write.

Compliment of a Friend

How many gifted pens have penned
That Mother is a boy's best friend!
How many more with like afflatus
Award the dog that honored status!
I hope my tongue in prune juice smothers
If I belittle dogs or mothers,
But gracious, how can I agree?
I know my best friend is Me.
We share our joys and our aversions,
We're thicker than the Medes and Persians,
We blend like voices in a chorus,
The same things please, the same things bore us.
If I am broke, then Me needs money;
I make a joke, Me finds it funny.
I know what I like, Me knows what art is;
We hate the people at cocktail parties,
When I can stand the crowd no more,
Why, Me is halfway to the door.
I am a dodo; Me an auk;
We grieve the pictures that learned to talk;
For every sin that I produce
Kind Me can find some soft excuse,
And when I blow a final gasket,
Who but Me will share my casket?
Beside us, Pythias and Damon
We're just two unacquainted laymen.
Sneer not, for if you answer true,
Don't you feel that way about You?
-Colin

Don't discount Jaberwacky for an oral ocmpetition.

Also, many of Robert Service's poems are tailor made for oral presentations

CTW36: Wow, that's a funny poem! I like it!

starwe: I'm in my school's band and last year we played a song called Dance Of The Jaberwacky (which is based on the poem). It's a really cool composition, but you have to listen to the whole band playing because each instrument has a different part. My band teacher read us an excerpt of the poem but not the whole thing.

I've never heard of Robert Service--I'll have to check out the poems.
