Hello all. I'm male, from Texas, and so on.
I've never belonged to a forum like this one and I'm not sure what's expected of me, so I'll look around. Book discussions? Sounds good to me.
I read my chapter of The History of the Conquest of Mexico for tonight (William H. Prescott, 1843). Chapter a night, it'll take a couple of months. I try to keep a history book going.
Fiction. I read short stories mostly. I like how they can create a universe, play out a story in it, then shut it down in just a few pages. An amazing feat when you think of it.

I also enjoy reading history and related subjects. Just finished "Rebel Yell; the biography of Stonewall Jackson." It is a lengthy book, took me quite a while. Other recent biographies have been "The Wright Brothers," and "Alexander Hamilton." In case you don't know, the latter IS the book that was the basis for the Broadway musical.
In fiction, I also like short stories, when I can find them. As for genres, I like science fiction, historical fiction, crime and mystery and even the occassional western. I short, almost everything
(except romance novels 
).
Don't be shy, jump right in; we may growl at each other sometimes, but we don't bite.

Yes, a chapter of history per day allows me to retain some of it.
The Civil War--one of the more interesting fields of study because so much was written by the losing side. That's not usually the case.
I've read a few Texas history books. The last one was Men Without Countries. Three Roads to the Alamo was good--interwoven biographies of Travis, Crockett & Bowie.
But most of my historical reading over the past couple of years has been current events. We're in a time now that's as fascinating as any in American history. Jaw-dropping events happen almost daily. And we can read about them as they occur, thanks to the internet. So I count current events as my living history reading.
In fiction right now I'm working my way through Robert E. Howard's Conan stories (3-volume Del Rey set).
