Re: Hello
Are you really unfamilliar with Hesse, or are you just used to seeing his first name spelled out... Herman Hesse? He's considered one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century and he wrote about, like every great writer! The human condition. Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, Demian.I took an entire class on Hesse in college, and I will say, it was one time that the quality of the work really lived up to its billing as "great". Even in translation, Hesse really nails your ass. Science is neither a philosophy nor a belief system. It is a combination of mental operations that has become increasingly the habit of educated peoples, a culture of illuminations hit upon by a fortunate turn of history that yielded the most effective way of learning about the real world ever conceived. E.O.Wilson

Re: Hello
Oops I'm embarrassed now.One of the problems with being self-taught is that there are probably big gaps in my education. But then I don't read much fiction. That's one of the great things about Booktalk you get to find out how stupid you are.I'll try and read some Hesse, if I ever get a chance - at the moment most of what I read is for the purposes of research for my book, (and learning philosophy so I don't get caught out when I'm talking to people like publishers, agents or scientists).
