"Full Measure" by T. Jefferson Parker

Unread post

Finished reading “Full Measure” by T. Jefferson Parker: a family drama about two brothers, one trying to get over PTSD and service in Afghanistan; the other is mentally ill, struggling with issues of self-esteem and family approval. The book develops slowly while exploring current day social and political issues. It is an enjoyable story with a somewhat sad and unexpected ending, nevertheless an ending of new beginning and hope. Despite the author's skilled writing style, I don't think it's “stunning, great, explosive, compelling or exceptional” as many critics have noted. I recommend it with a rating of perhaps about 3-4 stars.

I've just finished Sacred Choices by Karen Hulen Bartell

Sacred Choices is a heart-warming, well-written story with a difference. Smart and career-minded Ceren, an adjuct Professor in Art History, still falls for her boss, the Dean of the Humanities Department. Pregnant and feeling betrayed by the man she loves, she is adeptly transferred by him to Mexico where she is assigned to work as assistant to Dr Judith Truman. Bitter and twisted since having an abortion in her twenties, Judith does not intend to make life easy for Ceren.

Sacred Choices centres around the book they are writing on Our Lady of Guadalupe and Ceren’s inner turmoil as she tries to decide whether to have an abortion or to keep the baby she is carrying. A giggling girl in a white dress will captivate you as she teases both Ceren and Judith. The author combines history, religion, culture and the supernatural into a very enjoyable novel. 4*
