Fats Domino

Unread post

I was saddened, but also somewhat surprised to learn today that Antoine "Fats" Domino died on Tuesday. Saddened, because when I was in high school (in the 1950s), he was one of my favorite performers. I enjoyed his gravelly voice and his fantastic piano playing. I still remember "Ain't That a Shame," "Blueberry Hill," "I'm Walkin'," "Blue Monday" and others. My surprise came from the fact that I thought he had died some years ago. Maybe because of his weight, he seemed older to me than he really was - which explains my surprise that he was only 89 years old, which made him in his late 20s/early 30s in the mid to lat 1950s.

Fats may be gone, but is legend lives on.

Almost a year ago we visited Sun Studios in Memphis and the guide there told us that Fats Domino would still call in and play the famous piano played by Elvis, Jerry Lee et al. She said he was in his late 80's and his memory was as sharp as ever. We were also surprised as due to his weight one assumed he would die young.

He was obviously a dear man and much loved.

Husband and I are now having an argument as to whether it was Sun Studios Memphis or Studo B Nashville.

He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world is mad....

God bless you, Fats! You and Chuck Berry were my favorite artists when I was a teenager in the late 1950's. In the late 1960's I graduated to hard rock, my faves being Jefferson Airplane, Eric Burdon and the Animals, The Who, The Stones and Joe Cocker.

I still like them all, but in later age I've become more of a fan of classic country like Hank Williams Sr.

Heaven is now really rocking!

Amen to that, brother!

Two others I forgot to mention from the 1960's - Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Jimi was undoubtedly the best rock guitarist of all time. I'll never forget his version of the national anthem played at Woodstock. The only 2 others that have even gotten close were Eric Clapton and a top 5 finalist on "The Voice" in early 2016, Laith Al-Saadi. Janis was, well, just Janis. Her gritty voice was unforgettable. Port Arthur, TX's great contribution to rock music.
