Evolution Reference Hurts Volcano Film

Evolution reference enough to pull filmQuote:CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - IMAX theaters in several Southern cities have decided not to show a film on volcanoes out of concern that its references to evolution might offend those with fundamental religious beliefs."We've got to pick a film that's going to sell in our area. If it's not going to sell, we're not going to take it," said Lisa Buzzelli, director of an IMAX theater in Charleston that is not showing the movie. "Many people here believe in creationism, not evolution."Any thoughts? Is it valid to pander to an audience when a film talks about evidence? Is it wrong to present evidence, even if it is not acknowledged by some, that may be contrary to a certain belief system? Is that not a closed minded approach?Yet separation of church and state is a bad idea? We should allow prayer in school, yet not a reference to an accepted natural system?Mr. P. The articles say nothing about what sort of venues are rejecting the movie. Given that the reason they've stated are economic, I'd say that they're likely commecial venues, not state-funded. I don't see any reason why a commercial venue should feel any more compelled to pick up an educational program they don't think will sell than they would be to pick up a porn movie if the market won't support it. Will it make IMAX film makers feel constrained to avoid references to evolution? Perhaps, but that's the nature of a free market.

Quote:Will it make IMAX film makers feel constrained to avoid references to evolution? Perhaps, but that's the nature of a free market. The film makers probably just need to come up with a way of saying it without using the actual word 'evolution'. The type of people that are offended by references to it probably don't have a clue what it really is and references to it without the word would probably go right over there head.Or am I generalizing too much?

What about those of us who don't believe in _________ (fill in blank with anything not related to the sensitivities of the bible-thumping elite)? No one ever worried about my sensibilities when they put that snuff film "The Passion" in the theatres. I just chose not to go. My, how simple life would be if everyone were allowed to make their own choice on things like this.Lori "All beings are the owners of their deeds, the heirs to their deeds."

It played in some theaters, and didn't play in others, and you can bet that in at least half of those cases someone decided that it either would or wouldn't make them enough money to bother running it.
