Dracula by Bram Stoker

Unread post

I just started reading Dracula and while I thought that it might have archaic language, it actually turned out to be a really understandable and enjoyable book. And there are definitely some spooks here and there. Amazing Book so far!!

I read Dracula when I was eleven years old, and was utterly terrified by it. It gave me an abiding irrational fear of vampires.

I started reading it a while ago, and somehow never got around to picking it back up. One of these days!

Isn't that book what they call an "epistolary" novel, told through letters? You have to suspend disbelief due to that device, but it's not hard to do since the story is so deliciously creepy. I liked "Dracula" better than the other most famous monster book, "Frankenstein."

The relationship between horror and mass psychology is fascinating. Scary creatures gain cultural resonance by describing an unconscious symbol that pervades society. People can relate to the imaginative fantasy of vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens, Frankensteins, ghosts, monsters, etc because they mirror repressed features of our own minds, giving unstated permissions for taboo feelings.

I'm going to create a forum for Dracula tonight. It will be our fiction book for April, May and June 2021. And then I'll start on the non-fiction selection process.
