Right now I'm reading two books, one for fun and one for school. For fun, I'm readingThe Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. It is about a teenager named Holden Caulfield who is kicked out of a prestigious boarding school and becomes a wanderer in New York City. Even though it was written over 50 years ago, I can relate to Holden's struggles with growing up and feeling like an outsider. For school, I'm reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. It is set during the Great Depression and follows a family of farmers who are forced to leave their home and travel west in search of work. It's a very moving book, and it has made me appreciate all that my family has.

Just picked up (They Want to Kill Americans) by Malcolm Nance. Haven’t had any chance to start reading yet but it seems like it might be a good read.
It is a study of the deranged people who attempted the overthrow of American democracy on January 6th.
It’s a study of the militias and the deranged ideology of the insurgency of FPSfBs.

The Watchmaker's Daughter, by Larry Loftis . This well written 2023 book takes place in WW2 Holland. It's the story of Corrie Ten Boom who followed her father trade as a watchmaker by day and by night she was associated with the Dutch Resistance. An interesting story about what life was like for the Dutch during the German occupation.

The Librarian of Burned Books

Unread post

Presently enjoying this 2023 debut Novel of Viranna Labuskes.

Image

Historical Fiction based on facts. Told thru Althea James a small time writer from Maine who was invited to visit the early 1930's Germany when promotion of "The New Germany" was taking place and witnessed the book burning while there.

This extremely powerful speech in the book is given in New York City in 1944 to very high level people and it's a high point of the book for me
Few people have to watch their country die, "I have had that dubious privilege, and I can tell you that it comes not as a rebel shout but as a sly whisper. The cracks creep in, insidious as anything I've ever seen. It can start with rumblings about an unreliable press and rumors about political enemies that will threaten, your children. It can deepen with disdainful remark about science and art and literature in a pub on Friday night. It comes cloaked in patriotism and love of country, and uses that armor against any criticism.

"When I hear people talk of Germany these days, it breaks my heart. Not many people remember that some of the greatest thinkers and artist of our time came from my country. Einstein, Schrodinger, Mann, Arendt, the list goes on and on. Despite what propaganda posters may have you believe, those exiles represent the Germany I know far better than the mad man at the helm. I grew up in a place that prized intellectualism and civil discourse, in a country that held a reverence for books. I grew up in the land of Grimm's fairy tales and Goethe's epics. I grew up in a democracy, fledgling though it may have been, that allowed space for radical ideas and uncomfortable discussions, that encouraged critical thought and free speech.

"When I tell people about the 1933 book burnings in Berlin, many are shocked to hear that it was the students who led the charge, who lit the pyres and brought the books to the flames."

"Because how could that have happened ? Those students cherished books. Just like German's who burned their own collections cherished books. But they loved their own beliefs more. And that kind of love ? It can rot a person from the inside. Can rot a country from the inside."

There are nights I lie awake wondering what the moment was we lost Germany I knew. Some might point to the invasion of Poland. Some look at Anschluss there are a million moments like Kristallnacht, the night of the long knives, the Jewish boycots, the race laws, the opening of the concentration camps, the November treaty that brought about so much bitterness. but sometimes I think it was the moment the most educated country in the world willingly, joyously, wholeheartedly turned away from knowledge.
This speech goes on and I think any reader will find it amazing. It starts on page 361-364.

At the end of the speech Hanna goes on to cite from Mein Kampf that Hitler states that a smart reader should take from books only ideas that support the reader's views and trash everything else.

I think any reader will find some interesting parallels in this to what is happening in America today. Far beyond what I've stated in this post.

Re: Currently reading -- "This Is Your Brain on Food"

Unread post

For some years I listened to my coworkers speak of all of the trendy foods they were wanting to try as they were hearing about them on the many TV Cooking Shows the celebrity Chef's networks, Test Kitchens demo's, World Traveling Food Journalist programs, and on and on and on.. It seemed to replace wardrobe in the common discussions. Rarely was nutrition ever mentioned or any of its influences on the mind or body.

Recently I found a copy of this book titled, "This is Your Brain on Food" by Dr. Uma Naidoo MD. She is a board certified Psychiatrist, a professional Chef, and a nutrition specialist. Her book explains the "Brain-Gut" neural connection with the many chemical transfers that take place between the two such that when they are in sync you're at the peak of health. If not you may be troubled with depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, schizophrenia, or a bi-polar disorder to name a few. Dr Naidoo does an excellent job of explaining this so the layman can understand it.

The Doctor sees Pharmaceuticals as having their place, yet there are chemical substances in food that has yet to be discovered and categorized. We all know that there is no shortage of "yummy" foods, so often called junk, that people will choose over those that offer good nutrition. And the culinary industry offers a feast of "yummies" which may lead us to chemical imbalances and on to some of the ailments mentioned above.

The body communicates with it's various parts via chemical interactions. With proper nutrition these various parts work in concert. If something goes awry within the nutritional supply the natural defense of the brain becomes vulnerable to a number of maladies. In the eleven chapters these maladies are addressed and the three appendices 1) Glycemic Load of Carbohydrates, 2) Common Sources of Vitamins & Minerals in Food, 3) Antioxidants.

Certain spices offer distinct cognitive advantages and eight are listed including:

Oregano can knock out 3600 free radicals with one teaspoon

Turmeric knocks out 3500 free radicals with one teaspoon

Cumin knocks out 1600 free radicals with one teaspoon

Curry Powder knocks out 970 free radicals with one teaspoon

Chili Powder knocks out 615 free radicals with one teaspoon

Black Pepper knocks out 580 free radicals with one teaspoon

Thyme knocks out 407 free radicals with one teaspoon

Paprika knocks out 376 free radicals with one teaspoon

When Turmeric is used with Black Pepper the benefits are even greater.

There is much discussion of Mental Health now days but for many it is just hollow words or it used like a "Buzz Word". Dr Naidoo offers a deeper look into this subject that even Hippocrates recognized in his time some 300 years BC. The saying, "You are what you eat" or a product of it still holds true today.

I see this book as a rare & valuable find for any Library..
