Atheist related article mentioned on Yahoo front page

Unread post

I use Yahoo for email and for my homepage, so I tend to scan the short list of news topics when I logon to the web. I don't recall ever seeing an atheism related article before, although it may just be that I wasn't as aware of the whole topic until I started browsing this site. At any rate, it would seem that books by Dawkins and others have brought a lot of attention the whole topic.Since these links tend to disappear from the main page pretty quickly, I thought I would post the link here for anyone interested in reading it.Atheists challenge the religious right

Interesting article. I look forward to the SCA's announcement next month on the results of their "Come Out Of The Closet" contest on who is the highest ranking U.S. official who admits to being an atheist or as they put it "non-believer". Hum, I wonder if any of them have the balls?I was surprised, though I guess I shouldn't be , at the SCA'S claim that there are some places in this country where children are ostracized because thier parents are atheists.I live in Missouri, and the worst reaction I've received was when some old man gave me the finger after seeing the evolve fish emblem on my car. (At least I think that's why he gave me the finger. ). He had a jesus fish on the back of his car and made a point of passing and honking at me so I could see it. ....It was the best laugh I had all year. It still amazes me.I used to be a little baffled at the idea of "organized atheisim", until the Bush administration gave the Fundie's a reason to believe that they had the market cornered on morality and values. The in your face approach taken by some associated with The Rational Response Squad is pretty distasteful though. I don't think it's any different than some fundie telling me I'm going to hell if I don't accept Jesus christ as my personal lord and saviour. There are plenty of more forward ways of educating people about non-theism.I'm more interested in why people want or need to believe so badly, but I don't think they should be ridiculed for their beliefs anymore than anyone else should.Unless they're Fundie's. Then I don't care. Ridicule away. Edited by: seldomseen68 at: 1/6/07 1:19 pm
