A Mother's Reckoning, by Sue Klebold

Unread post

I have to think that A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy is one of the most extraordinary nonfiction books published in 2016. The author's name might still be recognizable as the mother of Columbine High School mass-killer Dylan Klebold. Ms. Klebold attempts to objectively present the facts pertaining to this horrible event, an impossible task, of course, considering her relationship to the killer, but one that she manages as well as anyone could. During the course of writing the book (all author's profits to charity), Ms. Klebold consulted many experts in such fields as psychiatry and criminology, giving the book an extra heft and value for the reader. It is painful to read, so one can only imagine how painful it was to write. The question that haunts her to this day, not surprisingly at all, is "How could you not have known what was going on with your son?" The book is essentially her attempt to answer the question.
