We've been discussing populations and conflict in Harris's Cannibals and Kings.
Here are two articles I've just read: in South Africa, violent rejection of refugees due to extreme poverty, and in Rome, a situation that has happened so many times against Roms (gypsies that are said to have originated from India centuries ago.). There is no place for Roms in Europe: in their official country of origin they are rejected too.
They beg, and are otherwise suspected of theft and drug dealing, some of which may be true, since they are not accepted in the workplace.
Recently in France we have seen the authorities offering them buses and some money in exchange for voluntary repatriation to Romania, but after a few months, they return.
At least there has been no violence against them on the part of the citizens, although there is some ill-feeling.
