Would you volunteer?
Two scientists are proposing colonizing Mars. Not unusual, but the twist is that they want to send explorers on a one-way trip. This would greatly simply the logistics and reduce the cost of establishing a permanent presence on another planet. NASA isn't exactly embracing the idea, but doesn't it make a kind of sense? How about you, would you agree to be trained up for this mission, an opportunity to be among the first inhabitants of a new world?

Sounds kind of cool, but when you think about it, your life would probably suck -- not just because you're leaving everything behind, but you have to figure at first your amenities would be quite limited. Plus it'd be like you're in The Truman Show.

It might be difficult to get anyone to accept this mission who wasn't absolutely down and out, as far as "earthly" prospects are concerned. And you wouldn't want to seed your new world with such types.

But isn't that the history of Australia and our own state of Georgia?

I would do it in a heartbeat if I didn't have a son. A one way trip to Mars will grant some lucky soul immortality.
No thanks to immortality!

Got that and still no thanks!

Of course. If the mission would be remembered as a great moment in human history and the start of what could be mankind exploring the cosmos why wouldn’t you?

Not me. Where would one get a decent latte? My subscription rates for Better Homes and Gardens would skyrocket (no pun intended); and anyway reading it at that point would just bring on a dismal sense of nostalgia. No strolling down leafy streets to peruse the bookstore. No leaves, no streets. There would be at least a three minute lag in my Internet communications, the speed of light being what it is. That means that debates with Stahrwe would be even more of an abstraction than they are now. I’ll stay here. I’m remote enough as it is, out here in the rainforest.

This reminds me of that movie Pandorum.
Interesting concept for why the ship was launched. Earth was on the way out, so they sent this ship on a 100,000 year trip, where people were supposed to remain suspended in hyper sleep. They system got fubar when they witnessed earth destroy itself and then people went crazy and didn't go back into the cryochambers.

Sounds cool imagination. This may help the earth but surely, I will not volunteer. I prefer to be with my family for the rest of my life and die than to be immortal but live on another planet.

Seems to me it would make more sense to send a bunch of robots first to build housing and such. Even after that was done, I think we have lots of problems to solve here on earth that need all the clever thinking they can get. Until we can learn to live sanely with one another without destroying our environment, I don't support exporting our insanity to other parts of the cosmos.
