What is my goal with BookTalk.org?
What is my goal with BookTalk.org?
People regularly ask me to quantify my personal definition of success for BookTalk.org so I'm going to take a stab at it here.
I could say that I'd like to see us with 1,000,000 page views per month, as this is true. We currently range from 250,000 to 400,000 each month.
I could say I'd like to see an average of 100 daily posts, as this is also true. We had about 50 posts per day in March and 40 per day so far in April.
But the most important statistic to me is how well our book discussions are going. I'd like to see more people getting involved in the book selection process and subsequent discussions.
Here is the goal:
24+ active qualified people participating in each book selection and discussion. This means 24+ people suggesting books, voting in each poll and then posting comments in the subsequent book forums.
The poll for selecting our next non-fiction book has been up for over a week and only 3 people other than myself have voted. Those people are Penelope, Suz and MaryLupin. I assume several other people will vote and many more will actually participate, but there is little chance of us having 24 or more voters and/or participants.
As a "book discussion group" I think this goal is reasonable. The overall activity on the non-book forums is nice, but we're offering quality book discussions and we ought to be providing it. So all my marketing and promotional efforts are designed to increase our overall numbers.
Any suggestions on how to achiece this goal is welcome.

Hello Chris:
First time for me in The Chamber. It's not as gloomy or drafty as I had imagined. I have noticed that when you say hello to new members, you offer them a discusion they may enjoy. I think that's a great way to make them comfortable. I have done the same tonight with a new member. Welcome, and hay, this is what we are reading, come join in. I think this would make people feel welcomed, and less intimidated, and more likely to participate. New members (I talk from my experience) love that first response, "Oh, someone is listening."
Many members are in the shadows, they are there, we need to get them into the light! The veiws of posts without a response staggers me. It feels like evesdropping.
Suzanne

Look at this! I don't get it! Why are there so many views, and yet so few replies? Does BookTalk have this number of members? 3198!
Chris, please look into the fiction. I joined this group because I admired the choices picked for fiction. Dorian Gray is a failure. I love it, but I feel like I'm talking to myself in the forum. You've got the non fiction, and poetry is a hit. Why poetry? Because somebody stays on top of it. Fiction is falling by the way side. So many members chit chat around the book, and do not delve into the book. It is my belief that new members join to discuss fiction, and contrary to many, I feel there is new fiction that is good and discussion worthy.
Found two cents today, thought I would give them to you.
Suzanne

Suzanne, just a reminder, views are endless and repetitive, they are never reset so when someone, let's say me, were to visit your topic one day, then the next day visit again, it would count as "2", not just "1". Just thought you may want to know that.
I added a lovely little line to my Signature. Be sure to read it...It tells the future.

The "views" are artificially inflated by search engine spiders. Google "search engine spiders" for a full understanding of what that means. But you can disregard the views column, for the most part.
Our fiction section needs to grow. I agree. But I'm not sure what to do. Yes, we need someone to stay on top of the fiction section. Any suggestions? Are you volunteering, Suzanne? If you're interested in being a moderator let me know.
