I've already posted similar threads about science and myth, but I also wonder what people believe about the arts. Feel free to tie this in to your answers on the myth poll, since art and myth are traditionally associated with one another. Please choose the predicate that best reflects your feelings on the subject.

I think art may serve all the uses cited but is not restricted to any one of them.

Art also may provide an emotional release or elicit an emotional response. Either of these reactions may be intentionally sought by the artist or they may be unintended consequences.

Artistic communication may be verbal -- as in the literary arts -- or nonverbal. It is often intentionally ambiguous and sometimes obscure.

The arts may be a balm for the human spirit (I mean nothing supernatural here). They may bring a sense of joy, of peace, of shared humanity.

True; that's a function of art that's been part of aesthetic theory since at least Aristotle's "Poetics". I didn't think to include it, but in retrospect, I think the poll's fine without it. Even if we concede that art provides catharsis, I doubt that any of us would insist that catharsis is the final determinant. After all, catharsis can be an contributing element in just about any of the options I provided.

Why do I find myself trying to justify the options I provided? Sheesh.

This questions harkens back to that great discussion thread way back about What is Art?

My response is more 'all of the above'...because the intentions (conscious or otherwise) of the artist vary, the art form varies, the public's purpose in consuming art varies.

That's the "I have to go to work soon" answer. Sorry. $:\$

Hi George and Loricat, there's some interesting points here, but I think you've both got a lot more to offer us. And yes Dissident Heart I agree, from my own point of view creativity is about the artist bringing confusion to order.

Well George what do you think about Mies van der Rohe? Do you think his work brought a long term good effect for society? I goes without saying that Architecture is a very imporant art form.

Loricat, have I heard that name somewhere else? I'm not sure. You are interested in the philosophy of art, so what about the effect Conceptual Art has had on our society? For example we have the trend of taking found objects, placing them in a different context and making something else of them. Would you like to comment.

I voted for 2, but I also like option 4. I think of 2 with respect to my appreciating art and number 4 can be in respect to appreciation as well as creation.

art reflects the deep desire for humans to create. speaking as an artist, whether i am painting, sculpting, gardening, building a barn... i feel the same, the power to create. when i am not creating, my mind is running overtime to make up for the lack of outward expression. the creation of art is an overpowering need - just a notch below sex and food.
how is our art affected by the rest of our world? like our dreams, our artwork is filled with symballisms and experiences and emotions from our waking lives. and so our art is always influenced by religion, politics, morals, anxieties, etc., whether it is subconciously, subtly, or blatantly so.
