Re: We've got the American Jesus, see him on the Interstate...
I don't really feel any spiritual backing behind it, but that kind of belief just makes the event that much funnier, because I can joke about it being God's statement and not just a common natural occurrence. Any way you look at it, it's still funny to me. I'd be making the same jokes about Darwin or Paine, but people who follow the ideas of men like those don't usually build enormous statues honoring them on the side of the interstate.
Can you imagine the process of building a giant statue of Darwin? Can you see some devout Darwin fan suggesting to the science department at a local university that they take donations to build a 6 story tall statue of his favorite scientist? Can you hear the jeers and sneering that would fall upon this fan (or group of fans), for suggesting they use scarce and valuable grant funding/donations to science in order to build a giant statue of a dead guy? The guy/girl/group of fans would be laughed out of the university. Why would they waste money that needs to go to science innovation/education on a stupid commemorative icon? Of course it's a stupid idea. That money could be spent in a million different ways that would be more beneficial than a giant statue.
But change the science institute into a church, and the science icon into Jesus, and suddenly it's not such a stupid idea. Sure, there are people starving in towns within several miles of the statue, it will bring joy and peace to all those drivers on the interstate! Forget about donating money to foster care and survivors of hurricanes and other disasters who are barely making it, we need to spread the word of God to those heathens who drive too fast to even care about a statue! It's a great idea! Let's keep throwing billions of dollars at it and say we're doing God's work!
Bam! Lightning strikes. Tragedy! Is God punishing them, or did they just not make it sturdy enough? Anyone want to place bets on whether or not that church will start raising funds to try to rebuild it?
And where are the scientists, who didn't build a giant statue of Darwin? Still working in their labs, using their government funding for its intended purpose.
Which group is misguided and wrongheaded again? It seems to have slipped my mind...maybe I got struck by lightning, too.
