We're back - please check in
Hi all,
I've reconverted the database and eliminated the character corruption issues, as well as the resulting data loss. There should now be no truncated posts. The only data lost are posts made between the first conversion and this one today. I'm sorry about that, but there's no way to restore them.
If you guys could just make a quick post here and say "Yes, I can use the board ok" it'd be a big help to me. There will still be some settings that need configuring, but I think everything major is back in place. As I said before, if you hit a bug, just let me know in this thread and I'll help the best I can.
Sorry again for the hassles the last couple days. I think we're out of the woods now though.

Looks like the page showing a thread of messages now sizes itself to fit my browser window. So the messages are a little narrower (and therefore easier to scan) and the navigation bar on the right side is visible without scrolling. Sweet! Thanks!

Re: We're back - please check in
Hi all,
You're probably wondering what the hell happened today, with the site being disabled again for so long. Well, during the last conversion (the one to fix the truncated posts) we started having doubts about the portal system we introduced. This morning we decided it was causing far too much overhead, slowing down the board to intolerable levels, so we nixed it.
We're going to do this the proper way from here on out. There will still be sidebars, there will even be a portal page, but I'm going to write that myself. All the features we know and love will be added back in due time. This has been a setback for us, but it's let us learn some important things about the board, and we'll be able to much more efficiently get back to where we were, and beyond.
Sorry for all the disruptions lately. Aside from the odd transient glitch when I'm working on it live, this should be the end of the downtime.

EDIT: And Happy Birthday to geo!
Thanks! But let us never discuss this again.
I had a bookmark of booktalk that was not working even this morning. It was booktalk.org/php or something like that. It took me directly to 404 page not found. Glad things are working now. Thanks !
Looks like shoutbox is gone. And also, is it possible to "thank" someone?

This upgrade has been very challenging. David has the site back up and you can expect to see gradual improvements over time.
We're going to try to keep the book images off the forum page so that the forums load faster. The home page will feature all of the books we're currently reading and also all of the books that have been donated by authors and publishers. My biggest fear has always been that our active members will bookmark the forums page and never even visit the home page. But I'll figure out a way to reduce the chance of that happening.
You'll see the shoutbox added back to the top of the forums and also the recent topics scrolling block soon.

I thought about bookmarking the forums page, but didn't. The "view new posts" link is very convenient and that's on the main page. I have to commend you guys (David and Chris) again. The new format is is a tremendous improvement and hopefully most of the bugs have already been worked out.

Re: We're back - please check in
Chris and Midnight Coder, thanks very much again for your fantastic work in upgrading the Booktalk forum.
The thanking of posts has restarted from zero, so thanks do not appear in old posts. Would old thanks be easy to restore?
Also, the list of recent posts takes to the start of the thread, not the most recent post, and does not give the name of the latest poster. Is it possible to fix this?
