I’m with Mr. P. on this one. Words only have the power we grant them. Likewise, I don’t accept the idea of a word being available (or P.C.) to one group and not to another. It only contributes to divisiveness. I understand the idea that communities embrace words in order to change the negative association with the word. Parts of the gay community embraced “homo,” lesbian community “dyke” and “butch,” pagan community “witch” and as Chris pointed out the black community embraces “nigger” and its various derivatives. Theoretically, I only think of this as “o.k.” if the community is willing to accept the use of the word outside of the specific community. Not the derogatory use of the word, the reclaimed phrasing. However, I just can’t imagine going around using those terms.
Two of my siblings teach in urban school districts with high black populations. Nigger, niggah, etc. are strictly forbidden words in the school.
As an offshoot, what do you think of this story? A student was punished for using the phrase “that’s so gay.” The student, a Morman responding to other students asking if she has ten moms, claims she meant it as “that’s so stupid.” Which is how I have heard the word used by many juveniles. Gay morphed from meaning happy to meaning homosexual. Why can’t it morph into meaning silly or stupid, without being necessarily derogatory to homosexuals? Should a school be able to punish a student for using the word gay in that phrasing, in that situation? |

Honestly, why can't we just let people do what they will? Words are only noises associated with concepts. If one noise comes to be associated with two different concepts, then why would you object to the use of the word in a context where its meaning is clearly not intended to offend?
Now that said, idiots are human too. So maybe, if you find yourself addressing an audience who might be offended by your use of a word, however unreasonable that offense might be, you should choose your words with caution.
And another thing, why the fuck is it, that people who object to the use of terms like gay or nigga are the same people who see nothing wrong with using the term dumb.

Curse words in general make no sense. The only reason anyone bothers to day them is because people have decided to care. People in our society are purposely makeing themseves miserable by enforcing the nonsensical idea of swears.
I can't stand it when people choose to dislike something. Why on earth would you want there to be more things that piss you off? Every story must come to an end. |
