XIII-1. "Apocalypse Now", by Francis Ford Coppola, 1979.
Redux version: 2001.
Frankly, I had been bored by the film when I saw it in 1980.
My impression of the DVD a few weeks ago was very different, partly because I had by then re-read "Heart of Darkness".
I was struck at the stunning visual quality of the DVD version, and I wondered how I could have missed it then. The film I remembered was a film of the technical quality of the 70's, and this looked so different. I thought perhaps this had to to with the new TV set I had bought just the day before ( due to the demise of the previous one).
Just today I read in Wikepedia that the redux print was supervised by Vittorio Stotaro, "who used a colour process of his own invention to restore the film for release and claims that A Now redux looks better than the original release print of the film".
