I am a book publicist and I represent Through These Veins by Anne Marie Ruff, a journalist with a deep background in AIDS research. Veins is a work of literary fiction set in the world of AIDS/HIV research and features two strong women in pursuit of a long-awaited cure. With the recent news about FDA approval of Truvada to prevent HIV and the patients who have recently been proved to be cured of AIDS, this topic is very timely and relevant. There are two giveaways going on right now: rachelleayala.com/2012/07/cure-for-aids ... -with.html and lauries-interviews.blogspot.com/2012/08 ... -ruff.html (excerpt posted here too). Please check them out.

Through These Veins is set in the wilds of Ethiopia where a charismatic Italian plant genetic scientist discovers a plant that a village doctor and his teenage daughter use to cure AIDS. He forwards the plant to the NIH and begins a chain of events that leads to Ruth, a senior scientist at the agency who recognizes the potential for the biggest medical breakthrough of the century. She must fight department politics to make it happen, however. In the meantime, the village doctor's teenage daughter is forced to leave her village and is exposed to "civilization" for the first time. This leads her to D.C. where she meets Ruth and they soon discover their connection. They come together to try to use their secret discovery to save someone they both love, but all wind up as victims of the government and pharmaceutical industry.

Anne Marie Ruff has reported on AIDS research, drug development, biodiversity conservation, and agriculture from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Her work has been broadcast by National Public Radio, Public Radio International, the British Broadcasting Corporation, and PBS TV. Her articles have appeared in Time, Christian Science Monitor, and Saveur among other publications. Through These Veins is Anne Marie's first novel.
