Hello everyone. My name is Andrew and I am an Englishman. I will read anything that comes well recommended, but I am particularly fond of good science fiction and fantasy. I also really enjoy popular science (non-fiction), especially around the history and development of mathematics. I can already hear some yawning. I guess I am somewhat of a nerd, I also play chess and poker. On the non-nerdy side I am into football (soccer for many of you), and I coach a local team. I love cricket too.
My quest is to find good fiction (and non-fiction). Looking forward to the discussions here.
Andrew

Re: New member on a quest
Hey Andrew,
Welcome, welcome - I'm new here as well. I also read tons of science fiction too, personal favs are Bradbury, Le Guin, and occasionally Asimov. I have a fondness for the classics. Yourself?
Cheers,
Alyson

Hi Alyson,
I am a fan of Arthur C. Clarke, Heinlein and also a little Asimov. I agree on the classics but I cannot judge recent stuff since I have not really read anything from newer authors. Any recommendations?

Oh dear. Never ask me for recommendations as a huge list is likely to ensue. I'll try to keep this manageable:
-Ken Liu: excellent short stories; I'm particularly fond of Algorithms for Love
-Ted Chiang: again, really great short stories; check out Story of Your Life
-Peter Watts: Blindsight; very classic feel to this one
-Margaret Atwood: she may loath being called a science fiction writer, but her recent stuff is pure SF; Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood

-Peter Watts: Blindsight; very classic feel to this one

Thanks, I will look those up. I don't read many short stories but when I do, I enjoy them. My all time favourite is Heinlein's "And he built a crooked house"

Hello and welcome Andrew! I hope you enjoy yourself here at BookTalk.org.
Are these suggestions all fantasy or would you consider them more SK?

SK? Not sure what that stands for. They're all SF - science fiction.Suzanne wrote: Are these suggestions all fantasy or would you consider them more SK?
