I find it ironic how Royale's mother wants to control his upcoming marriage - in the way that the grandmother plagued his father's life.

I am still awaiting for Ariah to have some redeeming qualities. By now, Royale has called off his wedding due to the strange, inexplicable encounter with the woman in black. I know we want to push toward his unraveling the mystery of his father. But Ariah is just totally irrational and just unlikeable to me.

I agree. I don't find her likable at all. I've now read the book twice and still find her irritating and the cause of many problems for everyone who has contact with her.

Who was the woman in black? I thought it might be Nina Olshaker, but she could not be found as a witness when they had the second trial

Good question. It's not clear if she is a live person or a spirit. I tend to think a spirit.
