I didn't realize but my library has The Road, and I just now checked it out. Can't wait to discuss the book with you all!

I'm really excited too. I should have the chapter threads up very soon, and some other threads posted up throughout the week. :)

The month happens to end on a Sunday. How convenient.

Yeah, The Road is an easy to find book that even comes in a cheap paperback form if you want to save a few bucks .. maybe helps that it was recently a movie .. haven't seen the movie but that's good, I'd rather read the book first. Sometimes I wonder if authors have screenplay rights in mind when they write, even if there is no specific deal on the horizon, and adjust accordingly ... ?

I believe it depends on the contract or whatever... I know some authors do choose to write (or at least edit/finalize) the screenplay... Some don't. For example, I know Stephen King writes at least some of his books-turned-to-movies.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about Cormac McCarthy's career in novels/screenplays and film. He's been pretty successful in Hollywood.

Film and television adaptations
The Gardener's Son was part of a series for PBS and aired in January 1977. McCarthy wrote the screenplay upon request for director Richard Pearce.[15]
In 2000, McCarthy's novel All the Pretty Horses was made into a film directed by Billy Bob Thornton, starring Matt Damon and Penélope Cruz.
McCarthy's 2005 novel No Country for Old Men was adapted into a 2007 Academy Award-winning film directed by the Coen Brothers and starring Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem.
A film based on the novel The Road began development in 2007. John Hillcoat directs this adaptation by Joe Penhall.[16] The lead role of the father is played by Viggo Mortensen.[17] Charlize Theron is the wife[18] and Robert Duvall is the old man. The film opened on November 25, 2009 to mostly positive reviews.[19]
A film adaptation of Blood Meridian, written and directed by Todd Field[20] and produced by Scott Rudin, is tentatively planned for a 2011 release.

I downloaded "The Road" for my Kindle and am reading along. But as is obvious I rarely have much time to be an active participant in the forum discussions of our books. Perhaps this will change in time, but don't expect much from me and you won't be disappointed. :)

Very excited. My schedule is looking like I might actually have the opportunity to participate in the discussion for this book. Got started with it last night.

Scurried out to the library and picked up a copy. This newcomer has some serious catching up to do.
