Are there any interesting facts or details about this horrific event that you left out of the book that you could share with us?

Yes. There were many people suspicious of Harvey concerning the death of his wife in the car crash, not just a few. Also, there is a lot more detail (e.g., testimony from witnesses that make clear that one crash was intentional) about the suspicious loss of his two previous boats than appears in the book. There were also more accounts of his military career than I included, but mostly not illuminating.

I realize that we live in a much more suspicious era than the setting of Alone but I would like to know under what circumstances Harvey could have been taken into custody pending a full investigation. From the information in the book, their were holes in Harvey's version from the beginning. Add to that the fact that the Coast Guard had prior dealing with Harvey's accidents and a suspicious death of a prior wife. Did the Coast Guard feel, in hindsight, that they should have taken Harvey into custody?

The things you mention were not all known by the CG at the time; and they were investigating the loss of a ship and passengers, not conducting a criminal investigation at the time H was testifying. Then abruptly Terry Jo was found and H left, no conclusions having been drawn yet. If police (not only the CG) had "connected the dots" based on H's earlier ship losses, etc., perhaps he might have been arrested. But there was nothing truly compelling on any one body's radar until after his suicide, when things were put together. Even so, it is not clear how tight a criminal case would have been. It is more the case that H had seemed suspicious to one person here, another there, etc.
