Although I agree with his most of Hedges' comments concerning elitism, I feel that in order to make his point, he totally ignores smaller (and quite excellent) humanities/liberal arts colleges and institutions. He makes it sound as if the States consisted solely of elite universities, especially UC. I don't accept that every professor at every university is either bought out or forced to "play the game", although I do understand his concern that if universities control and manipulate, who is left to voice the opinions of the thinking, discerning public?
