Post Contest ideas wanted
Who would be interested in a contest? What type of contests would be of interest to you, and would you participate? All ideas welcome :)

Post Re: Contest ideas wanted
A poetry comp, especially one where you have to write a funny poem based on a particular topic or person. Like say Tony Blair or some other topic. Bye the way I can't receive any prize but can I still take part in comps as I'd be willing to allow any book to be given away at the discretion of the site management ? Or I'd just forego a prize personally as the taking part and possibly winning something would be enough of a thrill for me.

You can definitely participate in (and win) any and all contests. The reason is we don't ship books internationally is because the rate more than triples. If donations were to pick up we could ignore the location of the winners. I think I'll add a new donation block to the sidebar soon.

I will be donating soon, I promise, I just have to get all my bills paid up for this month first!

And Chris, don't think you guilted me into saying that, I've been planning to donate since I joined, just waiting for the opportunity to arise. I'm so glad I found BookTalk. It's given a solitary creature like me in a small town full of non-readers an opportunity to share my excitement for books. I will do everything I can to return the favor. :)

Just saw a rerun of Seinfeld where Jerry tells Elaine that 'War And Peace" was originally named 'War---What Is It Good For?' I know, that's an old joke now, but what if you asked to have Steinbeck's works retitled? Try it. It's not an easy do.

I think you can arrange a online quiz contest based on books. And the time limit will not more than 5 minutes.

Am I an idiot?
Perhaps, certainly a Proud Young Earth Creationist among Free Thinkers is unlikely to be perceived in a positive light, but idiot? really, that is so pedestrian. Is there no creativitly left. I refer you to Cyrano de Bergerac for an example of clever reparte with insults and invite you to do your best, assuming of course this contest is approved. It seems the perfect blend of rage against the YEC, literature, and wit.

Post Re: Contest ideas wanted
Starhwe, I think this is taking an inside joke a bit too far, and it is unfair to suggest that insulting you because of what you believe should be a contest that will actually be rewarded and open to all members of BookTalk, most of whom don't come into contact with you and your stubbornness and don't need to be subjected to it in this fashion. I suppose you think you're being funny, but I find it arrogant and offensive to those who are serious about participating in site-sponsored events such as these contests. Having people try to insult you isn't contest material, it's playground talk. If you want to be insulted, find someone willing and do it on your own time, but don't waste everyone else's.

I actually like this idea. I have been playing around with an idea inspired by "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", not the book, but the idea. We could choose a book and add a component to the title, much like P&P and zombies, then write a few paragraphs. An example would be, "Lolita, and the Department of Children Services". I agree with you Weaver, this would not be an easy thing to do. The last contest that ran, "Change the Ending", only got one response because some thought it too difficult. Is this something you all would be interested in doing, because I think it sounds interesting. Thank you Weaver for your suggestion.

Stah: Come on now. I have intentionally avoided many of the threads you post to, because, quite frankly, I have tired of the insults that are slung back and forth. I read some of them, but I no longer respond, I just do not have the time and energy for them any longer. Please keep your disgruntlement in those forums. I agree with bleach, this forum should be safe from your haranguing. If someone has offended you, please address it in the appropriate forum, and refrain from spreading it to other forums. Thank you.

You and Suzanne apparently missed the discussion in Miracles. One participant referred to me as the resident idiot and his apology was equally pedestrian. If you are looking for a contest, what could be more fun than a "Roast". They need not be mean spirited and can be entertaining. It seems a reasonable alternative to a triva contest, and would require a fair amount of creativity.

I did not miss the conversation in the Miracles thread, in fact I believe I specifically said "this is taking an inside joke too far," because I knew what you were referring to but don't believe the rest of BookTalk needs to be in on it. You commonly suggest that the reason someone responds the way they do to a post you make is because they have missed the point or not read something fully, thus insulting their intelligence and reading skills and avoiding the relevant issue they bring up.

The whole of BookTalk is not about Free Thinking and philosophical/religious debates, only the forums designated for that purpose are. BookTalk is primarily a place for book discussion, so to assume that every member would want to lampoon a Christian apologist simply because that's what he claims to be is arrogant, absurd, and offensive, as I have already said.
I think you get enough "roasting" on the Religious forums, so let everyone else who doesn't engage in those conversations have their peace and discussions and contests that aren't about you.

I also agree with Suzanne that Weaver's idea is a good challenge. Example, "The Diary of a Madman, Found in a Padded Cell in a Russian Asylum." Bad example, but amusing nonetheless. ;)

You make a good point. I had lost perspective about the fact that other discussions take place.

Post Re: Contest ideas wanted
I would suggest using the last word/words in the title of a book to create the title of another known (or even obscure) book:
Example:

"The Old Man and the Sea" by Hemmingway
"The Sea" by John Banville

Cheating can be allowed, btw, by looking up books, but this way one is exposed to more books and may find something of interest.
