I love the use of coincident it is too perfect. I otherwise find this poem too choppy. I rarely like anything with such short verses. Occasionally couplets will work if they weave into a greater harmony, but this doesn't do that either.

Does the rhyme scheme bother you? I would agree that it, combined with the meter, is a bit choppy, but I think the overall imagery makes up for it.

The imagery is fantastic, but I would not select this poem to read aloud. The rhyme scheme is ok, the meter is just uneven and choppy. I love his mastery of words. But overall this poem doesn't rate well with me.

I'm a Hardy fan, but not because of his belief in Cruel, Pitiless, Designing Fate, which much of this poem concerns. I can't see why he has to attribute the Titanic accident to anything other than random chance. If you're going to believe in a kind of god-force, at least believe in a nice one.

258. "I'll Tell Thee Everything I Can," by Lewis Carroll. From The Hunting of the Snark and Other Verses. If you care to look a ways back, at no. 360, "Resolution and Independence" by Wordsworth, it's easy to recognize this as a parody of that serious and high-minded poem. You have to skip the first seven stanzas of WW's poem to get to the part that Carroll wickedly skewers.

I'LL TELL THEE EVERYTHING I CAN

I'll tell thee everything I can;
There's little to relate,
I saw an aged, aged man,
A-sitting on a gate.
"Who are you, aged man?" I said.
"And how is it you live?"
And his answer trickled through my head

I make them into mutton-pies,

Well, this one's a bit on the short side, isn't it? In spite of the fact that I really do like Whitman, I'm not really fond of elegies and there seems to be an over-abundance of Lincoln elegies in this canon. Goes to show what a traumatic experience that was, I suppose. His symbolism is impeccable; I appreciate the use of metaphor and imagery--but I don't really like the poem. (I tried to be a tad bit more faint with my praise on this one :))

Y'know, Whitman is someone I thought I liked, or want to like, but trying to get through this poem makes me think I really don't. Well, I still think I like "Song of Myself," which is his magnum o. It's not that I don't like eulogies, either, though I hate Shelley's of Keats. It's the shovelled-on approach used here and the endless apostrophizing that wear on me.

254. "Bright Star," by John Keats. Fanny Brawne was a lucky woman! It's endlessly too bad that Keats was so unlucky a man.

Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art--
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth's human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors--
No--yet still stedfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever--or else swoon to death.
