I looked in on this thread to see if the title text was by *the* David Brooks of public broadcasting, and lo and behold, so it is. I only half-heartedly pay any attention to him because one has to if you follow pundits, but I don't think much of his analytical processes, much like Dexter, and I think the reason is he is a centrist who repeats what I have already assessed by myself, which is fine, but there is no rationale for what he earns, given the difficult competitive environment journalists find themselves in between traditional and digital media.
This noted, I find your discussion as readers absorbing, and interesting in and of itself-- however, his fictionalizing examples illuminates his intellectual laziness. This is not done in non fiction studies, and if reviewers savaged him over this, they had justification. I am poor, but have never cheated on properly sourcing my articles or my examinations.
