Sea symbolism, Cormac's religious beliefs

Unread post

Engaging discussion. I have two quick questions:

1. Ofttimes in literature the sea evokes symbols of death, at least as a bridge to the afterlife. Any thoughts on whether or not McCarthy intended the sea to be symbolic in this novel? Perhaps when the boy and his father finally reach the sea, and find that it is gray, and not blue, this represents their realization that there is nothing beyond this life.

2. What are McCarthy's religious beliefs? I've read 2 of his novels, and if his novels are expressive of his beliefs, then he dangles between nihilism and Christianity. I truly can't figure this man out.

Thanks.
